Cristina e Philip, sposi: dagli USA a Colonnella per celebrare il matrimonio nella chiesa dei loro bisnonni

COLONNELLA – Un tuffo nelle proprie radici e uno sguardo verso il futuro: è questa la storia d’amore e di fede di Cristina Bartolacci e Philip Caputo, due sposi statunitensi che sono volati in Italia per coronare il loro sogno d’amore.
I due giovani italo-amoricani, infatti, si sono sposati Domenica, 29 Giugno 2025, alle ore 16:30, alla presenza di amici e parenti, nella splendida chiesa settecentesca di San Cipriano in Colonnella.

Una scelta non causale quella degli sposi novelli: il bisnonno di Cristina, infatti, che si chiamava Giuseppe, era di Colonnella ed era molto devoto alla Madonna del Suffragio. Una devozione di cui ancora oggi c’è traccia nell’edificio sacro colonnellese: i due angeli in gesso che sono a protezione della preziosa e pregiata statua di Maria Santissima del Suffragio, infatti, sono un dono che l’uomo aveva fatto alla parrocchia negli Anni Venti.

Il padre dalla sposa, che ha ripreso il nome del suo antenato, Giuseppe Bartolacci, racconta: “Nel 1921 mio nonno Giuseppe, dopo essere emigrato in America per cercare fortuna ed aver lavorato per circa tre anni come muratore nella città di New Kensington in Pennsylvania, decise di tornare in Italia. Mentre era in mare aperto, le onde dell’oceano si fecero sempre più minacciose e ci fu una grande tempesta. Essendo molto devoto alla Madonna del Suffragio, la invocò ripetutamente per chiederle di salvargli la vita. Quando giunse in Italia, sano e salvo, venne in chiesa a Colonnella per ringraziare la Madre Celeste. Come ex voto per la grazia ricevuta, donò le statue di due angeli, che furono posizionati alla destra e alla sinistra della statua di Maria: come durante la tempesta mio nonno era stato protetto da due angeli custodi, così anche la Madonna ora era assistita dagli angeli. Questa storia mi è stata tramandata dai miei nonni, poi da mio padre e io l’ho sempre raccontata ai miei figli, fin da quando erano piccoli. Da allora sono passati molti anni e molte generazioni. Mio padre Guido ha avuto fortuna come sarto, io nel mondo della finanza, così come anche nostra figlia Cristina, che è solita trascorrere qui l’estate e che più volte ha visitato la
chiesa di San Cipriano ed ammirato gli angeli che circondano la Madonna. Siamo orgogliosi che nostra figlia e suo marito abbiano deciso di sposarsi in Italia, rinsaldando ancora di più il legame con le nostre radici italiane e cristiane. La Madonna assista Cristina e Philip lungo tutta la loro vita!”.

Il parroco don Dino Straccia ha accolto volentieri la richiesta degli sposi di celebrare il Matrimonio nella chiesa colonnellese e precisa che Cristina ed il papà Giuseppe, da tempo e lontano dai riflettori, sono umili benefattori della comunità cristiana colonnellese: “Poco più di un secolo dopo la donazione del bisnonno, in occasione del Matrimonio hanno fatto restaurare i due angeli che custodiscono la Madonna. Ma non solo: hanno anche finanziato l’esoso restauro della tela settecentesca che impreziosisce la nostra chiesa. Il Signore li benedica e li ricompensi di ogni
bene!”.

Il Matrimonio, che è stato celebrato in doppia lingua, italiana ed inglese, è stato presieduto da don Cristoforo Pujol, amico d’infanzia della sposa Cristina, venuto appositamente dagli USA per concelebrare il Matrimonio insieme ai fratelli don Benoit e don Samuel Alloggia, anch’essi amici di famiglia.

Numerosi i parenti e gli amici giunti dagli States per festeggiare insieme agli sposi. Robert Bartolacci, zio della sposa, ha dichiarato: “Per tutti noi è un onore essere tornati in Italia e ricordare chi è partito per una terra lontana in cerca di fortuna. Mio padre Guido era il fratello di Mafrino, Nea, Stella, Gaspare, Giuseppina, Francesca e Pietrina Bartolacci. Mia madre Adriana era la sorella di Tina e Luciano Salvatore. Abbiamo ancora molti parenti in Italia e ogni anno veniamo in vacanza qui per ritrovarci”. Ha quindi concluso commosso: “Il legame con l’Italia e con Colonnella è molto forte“.

Anche i parenti colonnellesi hanno preso parte ai festeggiamenti con molta gioia.
Uno di questi è il cugino della sposa, Luca Salvatore, che nella vita fa il medico e vive a Colonnella con la sua famiglia e che per l’occasione ha affermato: “Siamo molto contenti che Cristina e Philip abbiano scelto il nostro paese come luogo in cui celebrare il loro Matrimonio. È bello che un pezzo di famiglia sia tornato alle origini per vivere insieme questo momento di grande gioia. Ci rende felici il fatto che Cristina senta ancora vivo il ricordo e l’appartenenza alla nostra comunità“.

Durante la cerimonia anche Guerino Reganatini, prozio degli sposi nonché priore della Confraternita colonnellese Madonna del Suffragio, insieme al figlio Pierpaolo che ha tradotto il suo discorso in inglese, ha dichiarato: “Carissima Cristina, che bello averti qui oggi per il tuo giorno speciale insieme a Philip! Siamo molto felici che tu abbia scelto di compiere un passo così importante in questa bellissima chiesa di Colonnella”. Dopo aver ricordato i momenti speciali trascorsi insieme in famiglia con la moglie Odette, ha aggiunto: “Sono molto orgoglioso di te. Sei davvero speciale! Adesso sei diventata una donna e una persona meravigliosa, sempre solare e con il sorriso sulle labbra, intelligente e con un cuore molto generoso. Tutte qualità che mi rendono sempre più orgoglioso di essere un tuo caro parente. Sii felice insieme a Philip! Sii sempre te stessa e non smettere mai di sognare! Con affetto Guerino e la nostra famiglia”.

La comunità colonnellese ringrazia Cristina e Philip non solo per le erogazioni liberali che hanno fatto alla parrocchia e che hanno permesso il restauro di alcune opere d’arte consunte dal tempo, ma anche e soprattutto per aver raccontato la bella storia della loro famiglia.
Una storia di fede e di devozione verso l’amata Madonna del Suffragio, che da sempre protegge il popolo colonnellese.
Una storia di povertà e di rivalsa che ci ricorda i tempi in cui ad emigrare eravamo noi Italiani.
Una storia di speranza per ogni persona che lascia il suo Paese alla ricerca della felicità.
Una storia di legami ed affetti che resistono al tempo e alla distanza.
Come ha detto don Cristoforo Pujol, durante l’omelia, “Cristina e Philip, voi non sarete mai soli. La Chiesa è una famiglia che unisce e che non vi abbandonerà mai”. Una famiglia che – è proprio il caso di dirlo – è universale.

COLONNELLA – A leap into the past, into their roots, and a look towards the future: this is the story of love and faith of Cristina Bartolacci and Philip Caputo, two American newlyweds who flew to Italy to fulfill their dream of love.
The two young Italian-Americans, in fact, got married on Sunday, June 29, 2025, at 4:30 p.m., in the presence of their friends and relatives, in the beautiful eighteenth-century church of San Cipriano in Colonnella.

The newlyweds’ choice was not a coincidence: Cristina’s great-grandfather, in fact, who was called Giuseppe, was from Colonnella and he was very devoted to the Madonna del Suffragio. Traces of this devotion can still be seen today in the sacred building of Colonnella: the two plaster angels, that protect the precious and valuable statue of Maria Santissima del Suffragio, in fact, are a gift that the man had given to the parish in the Twenties.

The bride’s father, who took the name of his ancestor, Giuseppe Bartolacci, says: “In 1921 my grandfather Giuseppe, after emigrating to America to seek his fortune and having worked for about three years as a bricklayer in the city of New Kensington in Pennsylvania, decided to return to Italy. While he was in the open sea, the ocean waves became increasingly threatening and there was a great storm. Being very devoted to the Madonna del Suffragio, he invoked her repeatedly to ask her to save his life. When he arrived in Italy, safe and sound, he came to the church in Colonnella to thank the Heavenly Mother. As an ex voto for the grace received, he donated the statues of two angels, which were placed to the right and left of the statue of Mary: just as during the storm my grandfather had been protected by two guardian angels, so also the Madonna was now assisted by two angels. This story was passed down to me by my grandparents, then by my father and I have always told it to my children, since they were little. Many years and many generations have passed since then. My father Guido was successful as a tailor, I in the world of finance, as well as our daughter Cristina, who usually spends the summer here and who has visited the church of San Cipriano several times and admired the angels surrounding the Madonna. We are proud that our daughter and her husband have decided to get married in Italy, further strengthening the bond with our Italian and Christian roots. May the Madonna assist Cristina and Philip throughout their lives!”

The parish priest don Dino Straccia gladly accepted the request of the spouses to celebrate the Wedding in the Colonnella’s church and specifies that Cristina and her father Giuseppe, for a long time and far from the spotlight, are humble benefactors of the Colonnella Christian community: “A little more than a century after the donation of the great-grandfather, on the occasion of the Wedding they had the two angels that guard the Madonna restored. But not only that: they also financed the expensive restoration of the eighteenth-century canvas that embellishes our church. May the Lord bless them and reward them with every good thing!”.

The wedding, which was celebrated in both Italian and English, was presided over by don Cristoforo Pujol, a childhood friend of the bride Cristina, who came especially from the USA to concelebrate the wedding together with the brothers and priests don Benoit and don Samuel Alloggia, who are also family friends.

Numerous relatives and friends came from the States to celebrate with the newlyweds. Robert Bartolacci, uncle of the bride, said: “For all of us it is an honor to have returned to Italy and to remember those who left for a distant land in search of fortune. My father Guido was the brother of Mafrino, Nea, Stella, Gaspare, Giuseppina, Francesca and Pietrina Bartolacci. My mother Adriana was the sister of Tina and Luciano Salvatore. We still have many relatives in Italy and every year we come on holiday here to meet up again”. He, visibly moved, then concluded: “The bond with Italy and with Colonnella is very strong“.

Even the Colonnella relatives took part in the celebrations with great joy.
One of these is the bride’s cousin, Luca Salvatore, who is a doctor and lives in Colonnella with his family and who for the occasion stated: “We are very happy that Cristina and Philip have chosen our town as the place to celebrate their wedding. It is beautiful that a part of the family has returned to its origins to live together this moment of great joy. It makes us happy that Cristina still feels alive the memory and the belonging to our community“.

During the ceremony, Guerino Reganatini, great-uncle of the bride and prior of the Colonnella’s Confraternita Madonna del Suffragio, together with his son Pierpaolo who translated his speech into English, also declared: “Dearest Cristina, how wonderful to have you here today for your special day together with Philip! We are very happy that you have chosen to take such an important step in this beautiful church of Colonnella”. After recalling the special moments spent together as a family with his wife Odette, he added: “I am very proud of you. You are truly special! Now you have become a beautiful woman and a wonderful person, always cheerful and with a smile on your lips, intelligent and with a very generous heart. All qualities that make me increasingly proud to be a dear relative of yours. Be happy together with Philip! Always be yourself and never stop dreaming! With love Guerino and our family”.

The Colonnellese community thanks Cristina and Philip not only for the donations they made to the parish and which allowed the restoration of some works of art worn by time, but also and above all for having told the beautiful story of their families.
A story of faith and devotion to the beloved Madonna del Suffragio, who has always protected the Colonnellese people.
A story of poverty and revenge that reminds us of the times when Italians were the ones emigrating.
A story of hope for every person who leaves their country in search of happiness.
A story of bonds and affections that resist time and distance.
As don Cristoforo Pujol said during the homily, “Cristina and Philip, you will never be alone. The Church is a family that unites and will never abandon you”. A family that – it is right to say – is universal.
